Pisa is a city and comune in Tuscany, central Italy, straddling the Arno river just before it empties into the Ligurian Sea, and is the capital of the Province of Pisa. Though known worldwide for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the city holds more than twenty other historic churches and several medieval and Renaissance palaces along the Arno, much of its architecture financed by its history as one of the Italian maritime republics.
