Piura is a city in northwestern Peru, located north of the Sechura Desert along the Piura River, with a population of about 484,000 as of 2017, making it the seventh most populous city in the country. One of the oldest Spanish-founded cities in South America, established in 1532, Piura serves today as capital of the Piura Region and a commercial and agricultural center for Peru's northern coast, known for cotton, mango and lime production.
