Plataea was an ancient Greek city-state in Boeotia, situated at the foot of Mount Cithaeron between the mountain and the Asopus River, which separated its territory from that of Thebes. It was the site of the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC, in which an alliance of Greek city-states defeated the invading Persians, and the city was destroyed and rebuilt more than once before falling under Macedonian control after Philip II's victory at Chaeronea in 338 BC. The modern village of Plataies stands beside its ancient ruins today.
