Poitiers is a university city on the river Clain in west-central France. It is a commune and the capital of the Vienne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, and the historical center of the former province of Poitou. In 2022 the commune had a population of 89,427, its conurbation 133,833, and its functional area 281,452. Known popularly as the Ville aux cent clochers, or city of a hundred bell towers, it is recognized as a city of art and history.
