Polyrrhenia

Polyrrhenia was an ancient Greek city and city-state in the northwest of Crete, its territory stretching across the western end of the island from north to south. It flourished during the Archaic period alongside settlements such as Lato and Prinias, and it continued to thrive through the Roman and into the Byzantine periods. During Cretan civil conflicts around 219 BC, Polyrrhenia allied with the Lyctians and Achaeans against Knossos. The city held strategic importance through its port at Cisamus, and it benefited from Roman era infrastructure including an aqueduct built during the reign of Hadrian.
