Popondetta is the capital of Oro Province in Papua New Guinea, with a population of about 49,244 at the 2013 census. It became the center of relief operations after nearby Mount Lamington erupted in 1951, killing 4,000 people, and lies near the Kokoda Track, the site of major fighting in the Second World War.
