Where does the name Parma come from?
The name comes from an Etruscan name that the Romans used for a round shield.
The Etruscan name of the city was adapted by the Romans to describe the round shield called a parma. It is uncertain whether the Etruscan encampment took the name from its round shape, like a shield, or from its metaphorical role as a shield against the Gauls to the north.
