Chartered in the 12th century, it was accepted into the Hanseatic League in 1267 and, under Swedish rule between 1648 and 1712, had much of its old town rebuilt and fortified, work still visible in the moat that surrounds the historic center today; it carries the official style Hanseatic City of Stade.

FAQs

Why was Stade boycotted by the Hanseatic League?

Conflicts inside the city led the League to boycott it twice.

Stade had been a member of the Hanseatic League since 1267, but because of conflicts inside the city the League boycotted it twice, which meant Stade had to leave. Since 2009 Stade has again carried the official title of Hanseatic City in its name.
