Stade is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, on the Schwinge River about 5 kilometers from its junction with the Elbe, downstream of Hamburg, with a population of 48,633 as of December 2024. Chartered in the 12th century, it was accepted into the Hanseatic League in 1267 and, under Swedish rule between 1648 and 1712, had much of its old town rebuilt and fortified, work still visible in the moat that surrounds the historic center today; it carries the official style Hanseatic City of Stade.
