Porirua is a city in the Wellington Region of New Zealand's North Island, one of four cities forming the Wellington metropolitan area. Its name comes from the Maori Pari-rua, meaning the tide sweeping up both reaches, referring to the two arms of Porirua Harbour at the southern end of the Kapiti Coast. The city grew substantially from the 1940s through state planning as a satellite city for Wellington, and by 2023 its population identified as 26.5 percent Pasifika and 23.0 percent Maori, reflecting its multicultural character; it recorded a territorial population of 61,500 in June 2025.
