Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, with a population of roughly 1.4 million as of 2022, and its name means Joyful Harbor. Sitting where five rivers converge to form the Guaiba, a large freshwater lagoon, Porto Alegre serves as the economic and cultural hub of Brazil's southernmost state and is known internationally as the birthplace of the World Social Forum.
