Prayagraj, known for most of the modern era as Allahabad before its official renaming, is a metropolis in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and administrative headquarters of the most populous district in the state. It sits at the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Sarasvati rivers, a site called the Sangam that makes the city one of Hinduism's holiest pilgrimage destinations and host to the vast Kumbh Mela festival.
