Preveza is a city in the region of Epirus in northwestern Greece, located on the northern peninsula at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf. It is the capital of the regional unit of Preveza, which comprises the southern part of Epirus, and is connected to Aktio in Central Greece by the Aktio-Preveza Immersed Tunnel, the only undersea tunnel in Greece. Is Preveza the continuation of the ancient city of Nicopolis?
No. Current scholarship traces the modern city to an Ottoman-era foundation in the late 15th century.
Probably not. The ruins of Nicopolis lie about 7 kilometers north of Preveza, but the name Preveza is not mentioned between its first attestation in the Chronicle of the Morea for the year 1292 and the 15th century, and no medieval monuments survive. The modern city likely traces to a foundation or fortification after the Ottoman conquest of the region, around 1486 to 1487, followed by a second fortification in 1495. For that reason it is most unlikely that Preveza continues ancient Nicopolis, although earlier scholars suggested it.
