Prizren is the second most populous city and municipality of Kosovo, on the banks of the Prizren River between the foothills of the Sharr Mountains in the south of the country. It holds constitutional standing as the historical capital of Kosovo. Archaeological evidence shows the fortress area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the city was traditionally linked to the Roman settlement of Theranda, though more recent scholarship has proposed other locations for that site. Prizren served as the capital of the Serbian Empire under Stefan Dusan and became an important Ottoman administrative center after its capture in 1455. In the late nineteenth century it became a center of Albanian nationalism, hosting the founding of the League of Prizren in 1878, a movement for Albanian national unification within the Ottoman Empire. The municipality includes 76 settlements and had a 2024 population of about 147,428.
