Przemysl is a city in southeastern Poland, in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, with about 56,000 residents. It sits on the San River at a natural gateway between the Carpathian Mountains and the surrounding lowlands, a position called the Przemysl Gate that has long made it an important trade crossroads. Founded in the 8th century, it is the second oldest city in southeastern Poland after Krakow, and its history has seen it contested among Poland, Kievan Rus, Hungary and Austria. Its Old Town is recognized as a Historic Monument of Poland.
