Punaauia is a commune in the southern suburbs of Papeete on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France, with a population of 28,781 at the 2022 census, the second most populous commune in French Polynesia. The painter Paul Gauguin lived there in the late 1890s and painted his 1897 work Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? during his stay.
