Purwokerto is a large non-autonomous town in Central Java, Indonesia, capital of Banyumas Regency and coordinating center for southwestern Central Java, near Mount Slamet, with a mid-2025 population of 237,940. It became the regency's administrative center after an 1861 flood damaged the original capital at Banyumas, about 18 kilometers away, and now serves as a regional hub for medical, educational and transportation services.
