Putnok

Putnok is a town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county in northern Hungary, about 40 kilometres from Miskolc between the Bükk Mountains and the Sajó river. The area shows evidence of habitation since Neolithic times, and a castle built by the Putnoky family between 1412 and 1427 stood until its destruction during the Ottoman occupation. After the 1920 Treaty of Trianon transferred most of the surrounding Gömör-Kishont county to Czechoslovakia, Putnok remained the largest settlement left on the Hungarian side. The town had 7,229 residents in 2008 and had lost and regained its formal town status once, in 1881 and 1989 respectively.
