Pygela was a small ancient town of Ionia on the coast of the Caystrian Bay, a little south of Ephesus, near modern Kusadasi in Turkey, its remains lying partly submerged at what is now called Pygela Beach. Greek tradition held that it was founded by Agamemnon from the remnants of his army, and it had earlier Bronze Age roots under the Hittite name Piggaya. The city was a polis and member of the Delian League, minted its own silver and bronze coins, and its wine was praised by the ancient physician Dioscorides.
