Qonayev is a city in Almaty Region, southeastern Kazakhstan, on the shore of the Kapshagai Reservoir on the Ili River, about 76 kilometers north of Almaty. Built in the 1960s around the reservoir's hydroelectric dam and long known as Kapchagay (Kapshagai), it was renamed Qonayev in March 2022 in honor of former Communist Party leader Dinmukhamed Kunaev and made the administrative capital of Almaty Region under Kazakhstan's 2022 reorganization. Its 2021 census population was 54,245.
