Randers

Randers is a city in the northeast of the Jutland peninsula in Denmark's Central Denmark Region, about 38.5 kilometers north of Aarhus, with traces of activity dating to Viking times and formal establishment around the twelfth century. It grew into a thriving medieval market town, and many of its fifteenth century half-timbered houses survive today; industrialization made it one of Denmark's most important industrial towns before it was outpaced by Aarhus and Aalborg early in the twentieth century. Its population peaked at 58,500 in 1970, declined afterward, and stabilized in the 1990s before a modest rise since; as of 1 January 2026 it had 64,764 residents, Denmark's seventh largest city, and its main tourist draw is Randers Tropical Zoo, home to the largest artificial rainforest in Northern Europe.
