Reims is a commune in the Marne department of the Grand Est region of northeastern France, in the historic region of Champagne. With 177,674 inhabitants in 2023 it is the thirteenth largest commune in France and by far the most populous in its department, yet it is only a sub-prefecture because Chalons-en-Champagne holds the prefecture. In antiquity it was Durocortorum, the oppidum of the Remi, the name Caesar gave it. For more than ten centuries the kings of France were crowned here, from Louis the Pious in 816 to Charles X in 1825, which earned it the nickname la cite des sacres. Its heritage includes three sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and many Art Deco facades.
