Rhithymna

Rhithymna, also spelled Rithymna or Rhithymnia, was a town on the north coast of ancient Crete. Ptolemy and Pliny the Elder placed it as the first town east of Amphimalla, and Stephanus of Byzantium recorded it as a Cretan city under the name Rhithymnia, giving its ethnonyms as Rhithymniates and Rhithymnios. Lycophron also alludes to the town. Rhithymna minted its own coins in antiquity, several bearing maritime emblems, and some ancient sources identify it with the town of Arsinoe. Modern Rethymno stands on its site and preserves its name.
