Rostov-on-Don, often called simply Rostov, is a port city and the administrative center of Rostov Oblast and Russia's Southern Federal District, lying on the Don river near the Sea of Azov. Long known as the gateway to the Caucasus, the city is a major transport and industrial hub in southern Russia, historically shaped by trade along the Don and, more recently, by its position near the Ukrainian border.
