Rust is a statutory city in Burgenland, Austria, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl near the Hungarian border, and with about 1,984 inhabitants in 2022 it is the smallest statutory city in Austria. First documented in 1317, it received market rights in 1470 and was granted status as a royal free city by the Hungarian crown in 1681, before the surrounding region passed from Hungary to Austria in 1921. Rust is known for its sweet wines, particularly Beerenauslese, ice wine and Ruster Ausbruch, and maintains town partnerships with Kulmbach in Germany and Tokaj in Hungary.
