's-Hertogenbosch

Western Europe

's-Hertogenbosch, informally called Den Bosch, is the capital of the Dutch province of North Brabant and the main town of the municipality of the same name. The city had 112,850 inhabitants on 1 January 2023. It lies on four rivers, the Maas, the Aa, the Dommel and the Dieze, and it carries the nickname Moerasdraak, the swamp dragon, from its role in the Eighty Years War, when it was a fortress town surrounded by marshes that were thought to make it impregnable. Around 1160 it became the administrative centre of the northern part of the Duchy of Brabant, and it received city rights in 1184 or 1185 from Godfrey III. The diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch has its seat in the Saint John's Cathedral.
