Salford

Salford is a city in Greater Manchester, England, on the western bank of the River Irwell, which separates it from Manchester city centre, with 129,794 residents at the 2021 census. Evidence of Neolithic habitation there dates back 7,000 to 10,000 years, and the settlement, whose name derives from Old English for ford by the willows, was granted a market charter around 1230 before becoming a major factory and textile processing hub during the Industrial Revolution and a significant port after Salford Docks opened in 1894; it received city status in 1926 and, after post-industrial decline, has been regenerated around Salford Quays and MediaCityUK, now home to the University of Salford and BBC North.
