Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria, with a 2026 population of about 157,834, sitting on the Salzach River near the German border at the foot of the Alps. Built on the site of the Roman settlement of Iuvavum and seat of an archbishopric from 798, it became a center of Counter-Reformation Baroque building in the 17th century; it is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and its historic center, renowned for Baroque architecture, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
