Salzwedel is a town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, in the northwestern Altmark region, with a population of about 22,964 as of late 2024. A former member of the Hanseatic League, it officially took the name Hansestadt Salzwedel in 2008, and lies on the German Timber-Frame Road between Hamburg and Magdeburg along the Jeetzel River. The town is known for its well preserved medieval architecture, half-timbered houses, historic fortifications and Gothic brick churches, and is the birthplace of Jenny von Westphalen, wife of Karl Marx.
