Samara, known as Kuybyshev from 1935 to 1991, is the largest city and administrative center of Samara Oblast in Russia, sited at the confluence of the Volga and Samara rivers with a population of over 1.14 million. Serving as a secret backup capital for the Soviet government during the Second World War, Samara grew into a major center of the Soviet aerospace and defense industry, and remains an important industrial city on the Volga.
