Samos

Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, south of Chios and north of Patmos, separated from the Turkish coast by the 1.6 kilometer wide Mycale Strait, with 32,642 residents at the 2021 census, the ninth most populous Greek island. An especially rich and powerful city-state in antiquity known for its vineyards and wine, it is home to the Pythagoreion and the Heraion of Samos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Eupalinian aqueduct, a marvel of ancient engineering, and it was the birthplace of the mathematician Pythagoras, the philosophers Melissus and Epicurus, and the astronomer Aristarchus of Samos, the first known person to propose that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
