San Juan is the capital and most populous municipality of Puerto Rico, a United States territory, on the island's northeastern coast, with a population of 342,259 at the 2020 census and a metropolitan area of about 2.35 million. Founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, it is the second-oldest European-founded capital city in the Americas after Santo Domingo, and its historic fortifications and La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas, are UNESCO World Heritage sites. San Juan is a major Caribbean financial and tourism hub, home to pharmaceutical, petroleum-refining, rum and brewing industries and known as a center of salsa music.
