Sandakan, formerly known as Elopura, is the capital of Sandakan District in Sabah, Malaysia, on the eastern coast facing the Sulu Sea. It served as the capital of British North Borneo from 1884 until 1946, when the administrative center moved to Jesselton after wartime destruction. Today it is Sabah's second-largest city after Kota Kinabalu and a major port for oil, timber and agricultural exports, with a 2020 census population of 439,050 in its municipal area.
