Santa Elena is a town in southwestern Ecuador and the capital of both Santa Elena Province and Santa Elena Canton. Originally called Sumpa, it sits on the Ecuadorian peninsula near the city of Guayaquil and is regarded as the location of the country's most important and best documented archaeological site, largely because of the discovery there of the Lovers of Sumpa.
