Sarnath is a town northeast of Varanasi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It holds major significance in Buddhism as the place where the Buddha is said to have given his first teaching after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Around 250 BCE the emperor Ashoka erected the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath to commemorate the event, a monument later adopted as the State Emblem of India. Sarnath remains an important pilgrimage destination for Buddhists visiting India.
