Sderot is a city in the Southern District of Israel, in the western Negev, with a population of 37,239 in 2024. It lies less than a mile from the Gaza Strip, at its closest point about 840 meters away. Founded in 1951 as a transit camp for Jewish immigrants, mainly from Kurdistan and Iran, it later became known as a frequent target of rocket fire from Gaza, with attacks between 2001 and 2008 killing 13 people and causing extensive damage and disruption.
