Sellasia (Laconia)

Sellasia, also called Selasia, was a town of ancient Laconia in the valley of the Oenus, on the road from Tegea and Argos, serving as one of the defensive bulwarks of Sparta against invasion. Its exact distance from Sparta is not recorded in ancient sources, but an account by Polybius of the battle fought nearby between Antigonus III Doson and Cleomenes III in 222 BCE places the likely battle site at the plain now called Krevata, in a narrow opening of the Oenus valley between the hills of Evas and Olympus, where the river Gorgylus crossed the plain.
