Sendai is the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture and the largest city in Japan's Tohoku region, with a population of about 1.1 million as of 2023. Known as the City of Trees for its many zelkova-lined boulevards, Sendai was founded around the castle of the feudal lord Date Masamune in the early seventeenth century and serves today as the political, economic and cultural center of northeastern Japan, having also played a major role in the region's recovery from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
