Serino

Southern Europe

Serino is an Italian comune of 6,531 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in Campania, at an average altitude of 416 metres and part of the Terminio Cervialto mountain community. It is crossed by the Vallone delle Barre and Ferrarese streams and by the 45 km Sabato river. Its many hamlets include Canale, San Giuseppe, San Biagio and Toppole. In the 1980 Irpinia earthquake the commune alone had 10 dead, 33 injured and 1,060 homeless, and it lies in seismic zone 2. The historian Francesco Scandone derived the name from an ancient Oscan word sarino, meaning clear, given to the very pure springs that contrasted with the muddy course of the Sabato.
