Shaoyang is a prefecture-level city in southwestern Hunan province, China, bordering Guangxi to the south, with a 2020 census population of about 6.56 million and a metropolitan area of roughly 1.4 million. With a history of 2,500 years, it was known as Baoqing before being renamed Shaoyang in 1928. The city has extensive forest cover, and its NanShan Pastures, among the largest in south central China, supply dairy and meat to the province.
