Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital and largest city of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It was declared the summer capital of British India in 1864, and after independence it became the capital of East Punjab before later being made the capital of Himachal Pradesh. It is the state's largest and most developed city, and serves as its principal commercial, cultural, and educational centre.
