Side (Laconia)

Southern Europe

Side was a town on the eastern coast of ancient Laconia in the Peloponnese of Greece, a little north of the promontory of Malea. Tradition held that it existed before the Dorian conquest of the region and took its name from a daughter of the mythical king Danaus, and that its original inhabitants were later removed by the conquering Dorians to the neighboring town of Boeae. Its location is tentatively identified near the modern village of Velanidia.
