Siem Reap

Siem Reap is Cambodia's second-largest city, the capital of Siem Reap province in the country's northwest, with a population of 245,494 as of 2019. The city grew from relative obscurity after the French rediscovery of the nearby Angkor temples in the nineteenth century and France's acquisition of Angkor in 1907, developing over the following century into an internationally significant tourist destination. Tourism accounted for more than half of local jobs as of 2010, and annual visitor numbers grew from negligible levels in the mid-1990s to more than two million by 2012, drawn mainly by the nearby Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
