Sindica

Eastern Europe

Sindica was a region and kingdom of the Sindi people on the Taman Peninsula and the adjacent Black Sea coast of the northwestern Caucasus, in what is now Russia's Krasnodar Krai around the modern city of Anapa. Its population combined indigenous Maeotians, a Sindian ruling class of likely Scythian origin and Greek colonists, making it, by report, the most heavily Hellenized native country of the northern Black Sea coast. Originally an independent monarchy, it fell under the control of the Bosporan Kingdom by around 400 BC and was formally annexed under Leucon I around 380 BC, with its principal town, the Sindian Harbor, renamed Gorgippia, though the Sindi retained a distinct identity as a subject people into the Roman era.
