Sonsonate

Central America

Sonsonate is the capital of Sonsonate department in western El Salvador, on the coastal plain near the Pacific and within sight of the Izalco volcano. The surrounding department is a major coffee-growing zone on the slopes of the western volcanic range, and the city serves as its commercial hub along with the nearby port area of Acajutla. Sonsonate has a sizable indigenous Nahua-Pipil population and a historic colonial-era town center.
