Stargard

Stargard is a city in northwestern Poland, in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, with a population of about 67,293 as of 2021. It sits on the Ina River and serves as the seat of Stargard County, and is the second largest city in the Szczecin agglomeration. Founded in the 8th century, it is one of the oldest cities in Poland and was the capital of a small eponymous principality ruled by the House of Griffin from 1377 to 1478. The city preserves notable medieval Gothic landmarks, including St. Mary's Church and its defensive walls, both listed as Historic Monuments of Poland, and it also became known in the 20th century as the site of large German-run prisoner of war camps during both world wars.
