Stepnogorsk is a city in Akmola Region, northern Kazakhstan, built from scratch beginning in 1964 as a closed Soviet city to serve the Tselinny Mining and Chemical Combine. The combine processed uranium and related ores from nearby deposits and became the Soviet Union's second-largest uranium processing center, making Stepnogorsk a secret city valued for its role in the Soviet nuclear weapons program; its uranium mine was reported shut down in 2015.
