Steyr

Steyr is a statutory city in the Austrian state of Upper Austria, administrative capital of the Steyr-Land District though not administratively part of it, at an elevation of 310 meters, with roots dating to Celtic settlement around 600 BC, the origin of the Steyr River's own name. The city marked its 1,000th anniversary in 1980 and became a center of Middle High German poetry under the Otakar dynasty from 1055 onward; in 1830 the blacksmith Leopold Werndl founded an armory there that grew into major industrial operations, later the Steyr-Daimler-Puch conglomerate and its successor Steyr Motors, both still headquartered in the city. As of 2018 the population was 38,331 across 26.56 square kilometers, with the largest immigrant communities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey and Hungary. Its architectural landmark, the Bummerlhaus, is regarded as one of the finest small-scale examples of Gothic architecture in Central Europe.
