Stirling is a city in central Scotland, positioned northeast of Glasgow and northwest of Edinburgh on the River Forth. It is the administrative centre of the Stirling council area and the traditional county town of Stirlingshire, and its position at the lowest bridging point of the Forth made it a strategic crossing between the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands, giving rise to its historic reputation as the gateway to the Highlands.
