Stobi

Southern Europe

Stobi was an ancient city in what is now North Macedonia, near present-day Gradsko, at the junction where the Crna River meets the Vardar River, a location that made it strategically valuable for both trade and warfare. Originally a Paeonian settlement, it was conquered by Macedon and later became the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia Salutaris, drawing prosperity from the fertile Vardar valley and nearby marble quarries at Mount Klepa. Philip V of Macedon annexed the surrounding region of Paeonia in 217 BC, the historian Livy first mentioned the city in writing in 197 BC, and after Rome defeated Macedonia in 168 BC the city became a municipium with full Roman privileges in 69 BC. The Roman emperor Theodosius I visited in 388 AD, the city was sacked by Theodoric the Great in 479, an earthquake struck it in 518, and Avaro-Slavic invasions in the sixth century destroyed its economy and infrastructure.
